After I shared the finish of the top and the layering for the Bright Swirls Quilt, several people asked about the pattern. The pattern is very easy and is fun, so I thought I’d work up the pattern and the cutting list for those who want to make a similar quilt.
The quilt is constructed using the Rolling Stone Block which I got from EQ7.
Though I’ve worked up the quilt using several other color combinations, which I’ll show you below, I will write the cutting list according to the block above. That way you’ll be able to figure out which fabrics to cut for each area of the block.
As you can see from the examples below, the quilt looks quite different depending upon the fabrics and colors you choose.
This sample uses bright lime green, bright lemon yellow, and bright orange with a tad of white. The color placement is different in it than it is in the example above…but it’s the same pattern.
This version is done with black and red with a tad of black and white.
And this version is similar except that the black and white has been carried into the cornerstones.
All of the quilts use the same basic Rolling Stone Quilt Pattern and the same sashing and cornerstones. Your fabric choices for each component will drastically change how the quilt looks.
Here is the cutting list for the Rolling Stone Block and the sashing and cornerstone units:
For the Rolling Stone Block – We’ll use the purple, green, yellow, pink and white version of the block for identifying patches within the block.
For EACH Block You Will Need To Cut The Following:
From the white fabric or the fabric you are using in place of the white:
You will need to cut (8) 2 7/8 x 2 7/8 squares which you will cut once on the diagonal.
From the yellow fabric or the fabric you are using in place of the white:
You will need to cut 4 rectangles 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches.
From the bright pink fabric or the fabric you are using in place of the bright pink:
You will need to cut 4 rectangles 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches
From the green fabric or the fabric you are using in place of the green fabric:
You will need to cut one square that is 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches.
From the purple fabric or the fabric you are using in place of the purple fabric:
You will need to cut four squares that are 3 3/8 x 3 3/8 inches.
For the Cornerstones & Sashes:
The number of cornerstones and sashes you need will depend upon how many blocks you make. For the 3 blocks wide by four blocks down version pictured here you will need 31 sashing strips and 20 cornerstones.
Cornerstones are 3 inches by 3 inches.
Sashing strips are 12 1/2 by 3 inches.
