Good grief, where has 2016 gone? It can’t be December!

It seemed like 2016 flew by in a flash.

Though it seems like June of 2017 is a long ways off it is just around the corner and will be here before we are ready. With that in mind, it’s time to register for the June 2017 Yellow Highlighter Class.

Yellow Highlighter Classes are different from other classes that I teach. Unlike subject focused classes, like how to write emotion, or how to write sexual tension, where you take a class, learn what you can and move to the next class, Yellow Highlighter classes start where you are by using your own work in progress and working steadily through the manuscript addressing the issues within the manuscript so that you grow through each post and each markup. The result is a broader, more internalized, hands on form of learning than can usually be accomplished within a subject focused workshop.

Yellow Highlighter Classes are month-long classes which meet three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.) The classes are  completely hands on with participants posting excerpts from their works in progress and then me going over them and marking them up in the same way that I mark up manuscripts I edit for publication. The feedback isn’t specific to just one area, like emotion, sexual tension or plot points. Instead, the markup highlights weaknesses of many types and offers suggestions for strengthening problem areas. A single markup may address a point of view problem–the need for a beat of silence to break up a line of dialogue–suggestions to strengthen emotional and sexual tension–or suggestions about too much or too little back story.

The way classes work, participants post a 700 word excerpt each day of class and receive a thorough markup of the excerpt each day that class meets. The markups that are given provide the same kind of feedback that I provide to authors that I am editing for publishers.

The entire four-week workshop is spent working through the scenes that participants post in the way that I described above.

On Day 1 participants post an excerpt which I go over and mark up.

On Day 2 the participant posts any recommended revisions or posts a new excerpt as directed on Day 1. We follow this process generally working our way through the manuscript.

Many authors have used this process to ready their manuscripts for contests, submission, or self-publishing. Publishers use the classes as a means of editing some of the manuscripts they contract.

Since feedback is given in a group setting each student benefits not only from the mark-up of their own project but also from the mark-ups provided to all the other members of the class.

Here’s what current students have said about Yellow Highlighter Classes:

I’ve been working with Laurie for a while now and owe her a great deal. My story was a NaNoWriMo creation that probably would have stayed unfinished if it hadn’t been for her patience and guidance. Now, it’s over 85k and will probably end close to 100k. Signing up for Laurie’s YHC has been the best thing for my writing.

I seriously give all the credit for my writing style to 2 great teachers (and this trumps all the workshops and formal writing classes I’ve taken.) Those two wonderful teachers are Margie Lawson and Laurie Sanders.  A lot of people can write but not many can actually teach.

J.D. Faver

In the first class, I learned a lot about my writing, my story, myself, and Laurie’s amazing ability to spot the little things that make a big difference.

Pennie Leas

I am positive of one thing. The practical instruction I’m receiving from you is more valuable than any creative writing course I’ve ever taken. I wish I’d been directed to you long ago! I can see the validity of everything you point out.

Laurie published my first book, Accidental Affair, and she contracted two (or was it three?) more. Currently I have three books published with Black Velvet Seductions, I just received the final approval copy from BVS for book #4, Runaway Heart, and Laurie and I are working on book #5, Final Kill. Laurie has truly changed how I write, for the better. Her insights have been invaluable in helping me to deepen the POV and emotional content of my books, and people have rated them all 4 & 5 stars, so we did something right, eh, Laurie?

If you’re new to Laurie’s class, fasten your seat belt and get your learning hat on, because you’re GOING to learn. She will make you a better writer and storyteller, and your readers will thank you!

Most of the people who take a Yellow Highlighter Class get enough out of it that they come back for them again and again. Because they are popular and they are time intensive for me to teach there are a limited number of seats offered for each class. The seats typically sell out within 24 hours of the registration opening. If you are interested in a spot in the June Yellow Highlighter Class it is time to register!

The June class will run June 6 – June 29, 2017
Class will meet three days per week — Tuesday through Thursday

Each package purchased allows the participant to post 700 words per day for markup–participants who want to post 1400 words per day should purchase 2 packages. Those who want to post 2100 words per day should purchase 3 packages…and so on.

There are 12 class days during the session, so purchasing one package of 700 words per day will move you through 8,400 words during the month. Most participants follow a process of post, revise, and repost on at least some sections of their manuscript so they finalize less than the full 8,400 words. Manuscripts that are already highly polished move quickly and those that need more work move more slowly.

As I said above, these classes tend to sell out quickly. If you are receiving a sold out error it is because there are not enough seats available to fulfil your request. If you have more than one package in your cart reduce the number of packages in your cart and try again.

If you have one package in your cart and are still receiving a sold out error then the class is sold out. If you’ve received a sold out error and would like to be added to the waiting list please leave a comment below and let me know you’d like to be added to the waiting list — please let me know whether you want to be added for this class only or whether you’d like to be added for earlier classes as well.

Though tuition for all classes is non-refundable I do make every effort to offer credits and/or move people into future classes when life intervenes and they can’t participate as planned.

If you’d like to receive an email when Yellow Highlighter Class registrations open please subscribe to my writer’s newsletter. I usually send out about one newsletter per month…usually when Yellow Highlighter Class registration opens.
