It’s already the 9th of April! The April Yellow Highlighter Class has just ended. Which means it’s time to open registration for the October Yellow Highlighter Class.
Though it seems like October of 2017 is a long ways off, the time between now and then will pass in a flash and we’ll be sitting in front of the fireplace drinking hot chocolate and thinking of Thanksgiving before we know it.
Yellow Highlighter Classes are different from other classes that I teach. Unlike subject focused classes, like how to write emotion, or how to write sexual tension, where you take a class, learn what you can about a given topic and take another class to learn about a different topic, Yellow Highlighter classes start where you are by using your own work in progress and working steadily through the manuscript addressing the issues within the manuscript so that your understanding of a variety of topics grows through each post and each markup. The result is a broader, more internalized, hands on form of learning than can usually be accomplished within a subject focused workshop.
Yellow Highlighter Classes are month-long classes which meet online in a private blog space three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.) The classes are completely hands on with participants posting excerpts from their works in progress and me going over them, marking them up, offering corrections and suggestions in the same way that I mark up manuscripts I edit for publication. The feedback isn’t specific to just one area, like emotion, sexual tension or plot points. Instead, the markup offered on a single day of the class might highlight weaknesses of many types and might offer suggestions for strengthening a variety of problem areas. A single markup on a single day of the class might address a point of view problem, the need for a beat of silence to break up a line of dialogue, or the news that a given scene really slows the pace and needs to be trimmed, moved or discarded.
The way classes work, participants post a 700 word excerpt each day of class and receive a thorough markup of the excerpt each day that class meets. The markups that are given provide the same kind of feedback that I provide to authors that I am editing for publishers. These markups are very similar to those that students in my some of my OIRW sponsored classes receive within the confines of those classes…though we go over more pages in Yellow Highlighter Classes and the whole class is spent going over excerpts.
In Yellow Highlighter Classes the entire four-week workshop is spent working through the scenes that participants post.
On Day 1 participants post an excerpt which I go over and mark up.
On Day 2 the participant posts any recommended revisions or posts a new excerpt as directed on Day 1. We follow this process generally working our way through the manuscript.
Many authors have used this process to ready their manuscripts for contests, submission, or self-publishing. Publishers use the classes as a means of editing some of the manuscripts they contract.
Since feedback is given in a group setting each student benefits not only from the mark-up of their own project but also from the mark-ups provided to all the other members of the class.
Most of the people who take a Yellow Highlighter Class get enough out of it that they come back for them again and again. Because they are popular and they are time intensive for me to teach class size is limited and the classes are scheduled and booked far in advance. Seats for each class typically sell out within 24 hours of the registration opening although they often sell out within a few hours. If you are interested in a spot in the October Yellow Highlighter Class it is time to register! Seats will probably be gone if you wait till tomorrow.
The October class will run October 3 – November 2, 2017
Class will meet three days per week — Tuesday through Thursday
This class actually spans a period of 5 weeks, though we will only meet 4 weeks during the 5 week span. I’ve added a buffer week to the schedule because my niece is having a baby (yes, I’m excited!) I’ve agreed to take care of her older children while she’s having the baby. Since babies aren’t exactly predictable in their arrival times I’ve added a buffer week to the class schedule for both the September and October class to allow for the baby arriving either ahead or behind schedule. We will adjust as necessary to accomplish the 4 week class around the baby’s arrival.
Each package purchased allows the participant to post 700 words per day for markup–participants who want to post more words per day are encouraged to purchase more packages. Those who would like to post 1400 words per day should purchase 2 packages. Those who want to post 2100 words per day should purchase 3 packages…and so on.
There are 12 class days during the session, so purchasing one package of 700 words per day will move you through 8,400 words (made up of a combination of new and revised words) during the month. Most participants follow a process of post, revise, and repost on at least some sections of their manuscript so they finalize less than the full 8,400 words. Manuscripts that are already highly polished move quickly and those that need more work move more slowly.
As I said above, these classes tend to sell out quickly. If you are receiving a sold out error it is because there are not enough seats available to fulfil your request. If you have more than one package in your cart reduce the number of packages in your cart and try again.
If you have one package in your cart and are still receiving a sold out error then the class is sold out. If you’ve received a sold out error and would like to be added to the waiting list please leave a comment below and let me know you’d like to be added to the waiting list — please let me know whether you want to be added for the October class only or whether you’d like to be added for earlier classes as well.
Currently all classes prior to October are sold out with multiple people on the waiting list.
Though tuition for all classes is non-refundable I do make every effort to offer credits and/or move people into future classes when life intervenes and they can’t participate as planned.
If you’d like to receive an email when Yellow Highlighter Class registrations opens please subscribe to my writer’s newsletter. I usually send out about one newsletter per month…usually when Yellow Highlighter Class registration opens.
One seat is $50.
The books below were written by current and past Yellow Highlighter participants. Please check them out. Killer Secrets, The King’s Blade, and The Caretaker are brand new.
